A pharmaceutical company has ordered the government to pay $1.1 billion to settle allegations it illegally imported erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra, from China, which it has long denied. The government's latest action, reported by Business Insider, comes as Pfizer, the maker of Viagra, faces stiff competition from generic drugmakers and other importers.
Pfizer's US-based subsidiary in the eastern region of Guangdong has been selling counterfeit Viagra to Chinese-American and American consumers since early April.
The government has not been able to locate the active ingredient, which is sold as sildenafil citrate, despite a formal warning by the Food and Drug Administration last month to the agency to stop any sales.
"Viagra is a safe drug and is being sold in China, but the FDA has failed to provide a definitive justification," said the report, which was released late Monday. "The FDA is taking serious action and will continue to act to ensure that Viagra is not sold to any person in China."
Pfizer has denied it had the drug shipped from China, citing the US Food and Drug Administration's statement that it had received from China.
The company said it had been using Viagra and other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction in men between the ages of 18 and 64. Pfizer, in response, said the medication was being sold in China to help men with erectile dysfunction. The FDA did not confirm the exact nature of the alleged sale, but the agency said Pfizer could not provide a complete list of the drugs.
In response, Pfizer said it would respond to the FDA's action. The company also said it would be contacting its suppliers for additional information. The company said it would be reviewing the situation.
"We will take this seriously and will keep our commitment to Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies to ensure that it is not a source of illegal, counterfeit or unsafe drug sales," said its CEO, Ian Read. "The company's action has resulted in some of the most concerning cases of pharmaceutical company abuse in the US and elsewhere in the world."
In response, Pfizer said it would be taking steps to help other companies find a supplier for the drugs.
It has also been alleged that the company sold Viagra-like tablets from China, which were allegedly laced with sildenafil citrate, in an attempt to boost sales.
The Food and Drug Administration has received reports of counterfeit products being sold in China as well as in the US to be marketed by other companies. Some of the drugs are advertised as dietary supplements, while others are alleged to contain prescription drugs.
Pfizer has denied any illegal importation of Viagra-like products from China, which it has long denied.
In its latest action, the FDA said it had not received any evidence that the pills were fake, and that it had only received positive feedback from users.
It said it had been conducting "investigations and investigations to determine the sources of these counterfeit products and their identity, and to verify their safety and quality, as well as their authenticity and quality."
The agency did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
The company is appealing the decision by Pfizer to settle the cases.Pfizer is in the process of gathering documents and other evidence from the companies to argue for the company's case.
